I confess—hemp has been both the door and the key that led me into the world of gardening.
It taught me to listen with my eyes, to be present with the rhythm of seasons and the whisper of weather.
It taught me to read the quiet language of plants—their needs, their joys, their silent calls for care.
Through hemp breeding, I was invited to glimpse into its genome—into the vast, untamed realm of what hemp can be.
It is the variation within each seed population, the subtle differences, that opens the path to choice, to crossing, to creation.
If hemp could awaken the gardener and the plant breeder in me—what has it meant to humanity?
We know that hemp was among our very first cultivated plants—perhaps the first.
Its generosity—medicine, food, fiber—made it indispensable.
Even nomadic tribes, who wandered without fields, knew its power.
I imagine the healer of the tribe gathering hemp blossoms for healing, seeds for sustenance, stalks for strong cordage.
And one day—perhaps by accident, or perhaps by wonder—they saw the seeds sprout.
And so began the art of planting with purpose.
This, I believe, is how cultivation was born.

Hampun kasvinjalostus on antanut mahdollisuuden kurkistella hampun genomiin, kaikkien mahdollisten hamppujen maailmaan. Juuri se että siemenpopulaatiossa on vaihtelua antaa mahdollisuudet lähteä tekemään valintaa ja risteytyksia.
Jos hamppu teki minustakin puutarhaharrastajan ja kasvinjalostajan mikä sitten on ollut hampun rooli ihmiskunnan historiassa ?
Tiedetään että hamppu oli ihmiskunnan ensimmäisiä viljelykasveja, kenties monikäyttöisyytensä vuoksi jopa ensimmäinen.
Paimentolaisheimoilla oli tietoa kasveista vaikka eivät harjoittaneetkaan viljelyä. Voidaan kuvitella että heimon rohdosvastaava keräili vaellusten varrelta hampun kukintoja lääkekäyttöön ja siemeniä ruuaksi. Varsia kuidun tekoon. Ja tästä on vain pieni askel siihen että huomataan siementen itävän ja opitaan laittamaan soveliaisiin kohteisiin hamppuviljelmiä.
Jotenkin näin kuvittelen viljelykulttuurin alkaneen.
